Innocence Compassion and some Crazy Cliff Essay Example For Students
Innocence Compassion and some Crazy Cliff Essay A novel, which has gained literary recognition worldwide, scrutiny to the point of censorship and has established a following among adolescents, The Catcher in the Rye is in its entirety a unique connotation of the preservation of innocence and the pursuit of compassion. With certain elegance the writer J.D. Salinger, substantiates the growth and perils, which lie between childhood and adulthood. Embellishing the differentiation between innocence and squalor in the grasps of society. The bridge that lies between these contrasting themes are personified through the novels protagonist, Holden Caul-field and his visualization of a cliff, which depicts a dividing point between the evident beginning and end. The connection, which binds this gap in reality, was made clear through a new found compassion, consummating Holdens place in society through the realization of his surroundings from which he successfully crosses over. Focusing on the rebellious and confused actuality of adolescents stuck between the innocence of childhood and the corruptness of the adult world, this novel strikes a cord, which most adolescents can relate. The essence of the story The Catcher in the Rye follows the forty-eight hour escapade of sixteen-year-old Holden Caulfield, told through first person narration. After his expulsion from Pency, a fashionable prep school, the lat-est in a long line of expulsions, Holden has a few confrontations with his fellow students and leaves shortly after to return to his hometown, New York City. In the heart of New York City, Holden spends the following two days hiding out to rest before confronting his parents with the news. During his adventures in the city he tries to renew some old acquaintances, find his significance in the adult world, and come to grips with the head-aches he has been having lately. Eventually, Holden sneaks home to visit his sister Phoebe, because alone on the streets he feels as if he has no where else to turn. Children are the only people with whom Holden can communicate with throughout the novel, not because they can help him with his growing pains but because they remind him of a simpler time (his inno-cence), which he wishes he could return. The trials of the adult world wear down Holdens vision of a place in society, portraying innocence as a form of retreat from a confusing world. On the subject of innocence and symbolism there of, which is repre-sented through Holdens thoughts and actions, S.N. Behrman writes: Holdens difficulties affect his nervous system but never his vision. It is the vision of an innocent. To the lifeline of this vision he clings invinci-bly, as he does to a phonograph record he buys for Phoebe (till it breaks) and a red hunting cap that is dear to him and that he finally gives to Phoebe, and to Allies baseball glove. Understanding Holdens notion of innocence and the role it plays throughout the novel helps to put in tune the underlying message found in Holdens description of the catcher in the rye. I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys aroundnobody big, I mean- except me. And Im standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliffI mean if theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all. (Pg. 173) The princi-ple of the catcher in the rye is a means for Holden to devote his life to the protection of innocence. .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e , .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .postImageUrl , .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e , .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:hover , .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:visited , .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:active { border:0!important; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:active , .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u816f4c38aba78cb449310c0292b8f94e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Physician-Assisted Suicide Is Defined As Suicide In Which A Physician Essay The significance of the catcher image lies in three areas of thought as implied by B. The reason for good grammar use is to guarantee th Essays
The reason for good grammar use is to guarantee that what you write is effectively appreciated and is simple and pleasant to read. Yes, I believe my grammar has improved drastically since the beginning of this course. One tip I learned from the Grammar review h andout was how to use punctuation with quotes: Periods and commas always go inside the quotes. I have never really had to use correct grammar so this review really helped me a lot. Yes, I feel better using commas, commas have always been a problem for m e, especially run on sentences. A fter taking this class , and reviewing the lessons, it has become clearer when and how to use commas, such as adding a comma and a coordinating conjunction. It is important to use outside sources to provide supporting documentation to what you are writing about, the best way to tell the difference between a good and bad source is to use credible sources, such as, school library, or google scholar. The difference between p araphrasing and plagiarism is , paraphrasing is a re-statement of something that was a written or spoken phrase and not crediting the original author in your citations . Plagiarizing is when you copy word for word from outside source and not credit the author . The difference is that paraphrasing is using an idea that you have read, plagiarizing is when you use someone else's work word for word. One way I will a void plagiarism in the future is not to copy more than two words in a row without using quotations and correctly citing my work in papers.

Three Characteristics of the American Pioneers
Three Characteristics of the American Pioneers After school, I walk in the door, plop myself down on the leather couch, and begin to think about the western pioneer's documentary we watched today in English class. Three distinct personality traits of these pioneers keep coming back to me as I ponder which ones to use in the assigned essay. Courage, perseverance, and passion keep pestering my mind.Courage is the strongest and most important characteristic. It took a lot of guts and spirit to move their entire family west of common civilization half a hundred miles between them and the next individual. These farmers lived in primitive one-room dirt cabins carved out of an embankment, were faced with constant Indian threats, and survived on their own. These families valor represented the American dream to be free and explore new opportunities. These adventurers possessed a unique trait that goes hand in hand with courage, perseverance. Throughout these families' lives, they were slapped in the face with hardships such as Indian attac ks and crop failures.United StatesIt would have been easy for them to surrender to the obstacles and return to work in a predictable factory. Instead, they kept trying, never losing hope that their luck would change for the better. The pioneers perseverance and refusal to give up cultivated America image of possibilities. Finally, I start to wonder what would bring them out to this frontier in the first place. It must be passion. The United States of America is a country of passion and commitment. This nation was discovered and populated by people overflowing with fervor, and it rose to its own government in the same manner. The pioneers refused to be forced to live in a cramped city performing a job that they were unsatisfied with. The individuals who moved out west went there and stayed for...

Internal vs. External Validity in Research Coursework
Internal vs. External Validity in Research - Coursework Example There is often a tradeoff between internal and external validity, due to the fact that that the requirements of a high internal validity is the creation of a controlled and artificial setting for the research, which then limits the application of the results to the natural and real-life situations (Mitchell & Jolley, 2001). The attainment of a high internal validity of a research requires that the participants in the research are shielded from the extraneous factors that may change the relationship between the dependent and the independent variables. On the other hand, the extraneous factors are fully operational in the real-life situations, limiting the application of the findings of a research done in a setting where the extraneous factors were blocked. Therefore, there must b a trade-off between the internal validity and the external validity, such that internal validity is only high where external validity is low and vice versa (Isaac & Michael, 1971). 2. Is there a benefit in achieving a high level of one type of validity (internal versus external) over the other? Is there a way to design a study or series of studies to have high internal as well as high external validity? What would be the benefit? There is a benefit of achieving a high level of one type of validity over the other, based on the nature of the research in question. The level of internal validity achieved in the study is low, while the level of external validity attained in the study is high.
